It evolved from roots and visions to the early Sixties when Lithuanian emigre and artist Jonas Mekas dreamed of establishing a permanent home where the growing number of new independent/avant-garde films could be shown regularly.
The anthology has since expanded its original mission to include film and video preservation; the formation of a reference library containing the world’s most extensive collection of periodicals, books, stills, and other paper materials related to avant-garde cinema; and an innovative and eclectic film exhibition program. It screens over 900 programs annually, preserves an average of 25 films annually (with 900 works kept to date), publishes books and DVDs, and hosts numerous scholars and researchers.
